## How Credit Union Personal Loan Rates Work

**Personal loan rates** are the fixed APR charged on an unsecured consumer loan repaid over a set term, typically 12-84 months. The rate a credit union publishes is usually its “as low as” rate for the strongest borrowers; shorter terms and share-secured loans price lower, longer terms and weaker credit price higher.

Credit unions are member-owned and federal credit unions are capped at 18% APR on most loans, which is why the range on this page sits where it does. The gap between the lowest and the median rate is the reason to shop: two credit unions in the same state can be several points apart on the same loan.

FAQ

## Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about credit union personal loan rates

As of September 27, 2026, the credit union median personal loan rate is 9.74% APR across 1562 credit unions tracked by RateAPI. The lowest published personal loan rate is 1.00% APR at Amherst (NY); the highest is 28.00% APR. Your rate depends on your credit score, the loan amount and term, and whether the loan is secured.

What is the current credit union personal loan rate?

A personal loan is usually unsecured and carries a fixed APR for a set term (12-84 months), so the monthly payment never changes. The APR a credit union publishes is typically its "as low as" rate for the strongest borrowers; the rate you are offered depends on your credit score, debt-to-income ratio, the amount and the term. Shorter terms and secured (share- or certificate-backed) loans price lower.

How do personal loan rates work?

Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit institutions, and federal credit unions are capped at 18% APR on most loans. That cap and the absence of shareholders keep published personal loan rates below what many for-profit and online lenders charge. The figures here are published member rates; membership is required before you can borrow.

Why are credit union personal loan rates lower?

Use the state grid on this page. Each state page lists the credit unions serving that state with their current personal loan APR, the lowest and median for the state, and who can join each credit union. Rates outside our freshness window are suppressed, so an empty state means nothing fresh enough was published.

How do I find the lowest personal loan rate in my state?

A personal loan is unsecured, fixed-rate and fast to fund; a HELOC is secured by your home, usually variable, and typically carries a lower rate. If you own a home with equity and can tolerate a variable rate, compare the HELOC median on our HELOC rates page against the personal loan median above.

Personal loan or HELOC for debt consolidation?

Yes. GET https://api.rateapi.dev/v1/benchmarks?product_type=personal_loan returns the national and per-state benchmark; POST https://api.rateapi.dev/v1/decisions with product_type "personal_loan", an amount and term_months returns ranked credit union offers with APR, monthly payment and total interest.
