Methodology
How the Index Is Built
Every index value is the median rate across all US credit unions RateAPI tracks offering that product. Loans are measured in APR (rate plus points and fees, where published); deposits in APY. The median — not an advertised or lowest rate — is the headline because it describes the middle of the real market and resists single-institution outliers. Each figure carries the timestamp of the underlying data.
- Measure: Median APR for loans, median APY for deposits
- Source: Credit union rate sheets, scraped and re-verified daily
- Ranking: True cost (APR + points + fees) — zero affiliate relationships
- Freshness: Every value is dated to the data it was computed from
- Access: Same numbers via GET /v1/benchmarks and the MCP server
For the full data-collection and verification process, see our methodology documentation. For a deeper single-product view, see the current mortgage rates page and the mortgage rate benchmark.

RateAPI Credit Union Rate Index — FAQ
The RateAPI Credit Union Rate Index is a dated, national median rate measured directly from the rate sheets of thousands of US credit unions. As of August 20, 2026, the index for 30-year fixed mortgages is 6.692% median APR across 441 credit unions. It is ranked by true cost (APR + points + fees), with zero affiliate relationships.
Each product's index value is the median APR (for loans) or median APY (for deposits) across every credit union RateAPI tracks offering that product nationwide. The median is used rather than an advertised or lowest rate because it reflects the typical rate a member actually sees, and is resistant to single-institution outliers.
The lowest advertised rate is often a promotional or narrowly-qualified figure. The median describes the middle of the real market, so it is the honest headline number. RateAPI still publishes the lowest APR and the named institution offering it alongside every median.
RateAPI re-verifies credit union rate sheets daily. Every value on this page carries the exact timestamp of the data it was computed from, so you always know how fresh the index is.
