How the Index Is Built

Every index value is the median rate across all US credit unions RateAPI tracks offering that product. Loans are measured in APR (rate plus points and fees, where published); deposits in APY. The median — not an advertised or lowest rate — is the headline because it describes the middle of the real market and resists single-institution outliers. Each figure carries the timestamp of the underlying data.

  • Measure: Median APR for loans, median APY for deposits
  • Source: Credit union rate sheets, scraped and re-verified daily
  • Ranking: True cost (APR + points + fees) — zero affiliate relationships
  • Freshness: Every value is dated to the data it was computed from
  • Access: Same numbers via GET /v1/benchmarks and the MCP server

For the full data-collection and verification process, see our methodology documentation. For a deeper single-product view, see the current mortgage rates page and the mortgage rate benchmark.
